Varnost in obratovanje 

Reaktor TRIGA obratuje v skladu z najvišjimi nacionalnimi in mednarodnimi standardi jedrske varnosti. Namenjen je širokemu spektru uporabe: raziskavam z nevtroni in gama sevanjem, izobraževanju, usposabljanju, analizi materialov in razvoju novih tehnologij. Preberite več

Raziskovalna dejavnost

Reaktor se uporablja za raziskave na področjih:

  • reaktorske fizike;
  • materialov in sevalnih poškodb;
  • analitične kemije (zlasti nevtronske aktivacijske analize);
  • fizike trdne snovi in nevtronske spektrometrije;
  • dozimetrije in jedrske varnosti.

Omogoča:

  • obsevanje materialov, komponent in bioloških vzorcev;
  • razvoj in validacijo računalniških modelov;
  • razvoj novih eksperimentalnih metod in varnostnih analiz;
  • optimizacijo obratovanja reaktorja.

Rezultati raziskav so bili objavljeni v več kot 300 znanstvenih člankih in 600 referatih. Reaktor so uporabili pri več kot 20 doktorskih delih, 30 magisterijih in 100 univerzitetnih diplomah. Reaktor sodeluje tudi v mednarodnih projektih, kot so raziskave v okviru CERN.

  • sevalne poškodbe in reaktorski materiali
  • razvoj nevtronske dozimetrije
  • nove eksperimentalne metode za preučevanje lastnosti reaktorjev
  • uporaba obsevanih gorivnih elementov kot močnega vira sevanja gama
  • obsevanje rastlinskega semena za raziskave v agronomiji

Izobraževanje in usposabljanje

Reaktor omogoča:

  • praktične vaje v okviru tečajev za operaterje JE Krško (v sodelovanju z Izobraževalnim centrom za jedrsko tehnologijo);
  • praktične vaje za dodiplomske in podiplomske študente fizike in jedrske tehnike Fakultete za matematiko in fiziko, Univerza v Ljubljani;
  • praktične vaje pri tečajih MAAE ali drugih mednarodnih tečajev;
  • vodenje tujih praktikantov (MAAE);
  • usposabljanje operaterjev Nuklearna elektrarna Krško;
  • sodelovanje v mednarodnih tečajih z IAEA;
  • vizualizacijo reaktorskih preračunov.

Na reaktorju se je izobraževala večina slovenskih jedrskih strokovnjakov, med njimi vsi profesorji reaktorske fizike in jedrske tehnike na univerzah v Ljubljani in v Mariboru ter ključni strokovnjaki NE Krško, Uprave republike Slovenije za jedrsko varnost in Agencije za radioaktivne odpadke.

Izdelava radioaktivnih izotopov

  • Z radioaktivnimi izotopi, ki so bili izdelani na reaktorju, so zdravili ali diagnosticirali več kot 50.000 pacientov (predvsem tehnecij, fluor-18 in zlato);
  • 10-20 industrijskih zaprtih virov na leto (pretežno kobalt), vsega skupaj več sto enot;
  • Radioaktivni izotopi za posebne namene, npr. radioaktivni natrij v obliki vodotopne spojine za testiranje kvalitete pare v turbinah NE Krško;
  • Dopiranje polprevodnikov.

Obiski

Reaktorski infrastrukturni center omogoča organizirane obiske reaktorja TRIGA za študente, strokovnjake in širšo javnost. Obiski so namenjeni spoznavanju delovanja reaktorja, njegove vloge v raziskavah ter uporabe jedrskih tehnologij v praksi.

Obiski vključujejo:

  • predstavitev delovanja raziskovalnega reaktorja TRIGA;
  • ogled reaktorskega prostora in opreme (kjer je to mogoče);
  • prikaz uporabe reaktorja v raziskavah, industriji in medicini;
  • predstavitev varnostnih sistemov in zaščite pred sevanjem;
  • strokovno vodenje in prilagoditev vsebine glede na skupino.

Programi obiskov so prilagojeni različnim ciljnim skupinam, od osnovnošolcev in dijakov do študentov ter strokovne javnosti. Poseben poudarek je na izobraževanju, varnosti in razumevanju rabe jedrske energije.

Tehnični opis

Reaktor TRIGA Mark II je raziskovalni jedrski reaktor z nazivno toplotno močjo 250 kW, zasnovan za varno in fleksibilno uporabo v raziskovalne in izobraževalne namene. Sredica reaktorja se nahaja na dnu bazena z demineralizirano vodo, ki služi kot hladilo in moderator. Hlajenje poteka pasivno z naravno konvekcijo, kar prispeva k visoki inherentni varnosti sistema.

Gorivo je sestavljeno iz zlitine urana in cirkonijevega hidrida (UZrH), obogatenega na 20 %, kar omogoča značilno negativno temperaturno povratno zanko. Ta lastnost zagotavlja, da se ob povečanju moči reaktor samodejno stabilizira.

Reaktor omogoča različne eksperimentalne konfiguracije:

  • več kot 90 pozicij v sredici za gorivo, kontrolne palice in obsevalne kanale
  • vertikalni in horizontalni obsevalni kanali
  • termalna in termalizirajoča kolona
  • pnevmatski sistemi za hitro obsevanje vzorcev

Posebnost reaktorja je tudi pulzni način obratovanja, pri katerem lahko moč za kratek čas naraste do zelo visokih vrednosti, kar se uporablja predvsem za raziskave in validacijo fizikalnih modelov.

Reaktor je bil leta 1991 temeljito posodobljen, kar omogoča nadaljnje varno in učinkovito obratovanje ter razširitev njegovih zmogljivosti.

Varnost in obratovanje

Reaktor TRIGA obratuje v skladu z najvišjimi nacionalnimi in mednarodnimi standardi jedrske varnosti. Njegovo delovanje nadzorujejo:

Vsa pomembna vprašanja zasnove, izgradnje in delovanja reaktorja, ki imajo vpliv na jedrsko varnost, so obdelana v posebnem Varnostnem poročilu. Jedrska varnost reaktorja temelji na:

  • inherentno varni zasnovi reaktorja
  • visoko usposobljenem osebju
  • sistemu zagotavljanja kakovosti

Radioaktivnost v okolju se neprekinjeno spremlja, pri čemer v celotni zgodovini obratovanja ni bilo preseganj dovoljenih mejnih vrednosti ali nedovoljenih izpustov. Meritve izvaja vrhunsko usposobljena in opremljena Služba za varstvo pred ionizirajočim sevanjem IJS. Rezultate meritev redno posredujejo URSJV in so objavljeni v letnih poročilih o jedrski in radiološki varnosti.

Reaktor proizvede približno 50 litrov nizko in srednje radioaktivnih odpadkov na leto. Shranjujemo jih v centralnem državnem prehodnem skladišču za nizko in srednje radioaktivne odpadke, ki je postavljeno tik ob rektorski zgradbi, upravlja pa ga Agencija za radioaktivne odpadke (ARAO). Leta 1999 smo z reaktorja odpeljali vse izrabljene gorivne elemente (vsega skupaj 219) na trajno odlaganje v ZDA. V Reaktorskem infrastrukturnem centru od takrat ni visoko radioaktivnih odpadkov v obliki izrabljenega goriva. Reaktor ima veljavno obratovalno dovoljenje do leta 2034.

Dosežki in vpliv

Reaktor igra pomembno vlogo pri razvoju jedrske tehnologije in varnostne kulture v Sloveniji. Od vsega začetka je predstavljal središčno točko, okoli katere se je razvijala moderna tehnologija in to ne samo jedrska: številni uspešni strokovnjaki na področju računalništva, informatike, energetike, varstva pred sevanjem, tehnike, itd. so s svojim delom začeli na reaktorju. Naš reaktor je v Svetu dobro znan in ga v strokovnih krogih radi navajajo za zgled, kaj vse se da narediti tudi z majhnim raziskovalnim reaktorjem in majhnimi sredstvi. Mednarodno sodelovanje, ki ga gojimo na reaktorju, prispeva k ugledu Instituta Jožef Stefan, slovenske znanosti in Slovenije nasploh.

Posredni učinki

Vzdrževanje tehnološkega nivoja pri obratovanju reaktorja že od vsega začetka spodbuja uvajanje najnovejših tehnoloških dosežkov, ki se kasneje široko uveljavijo:

  • za potrebe reaktorskih preračunov smo na IJS že v šestdesetih letih nabavili prvi elektronski računalnik (ZUSE), s čemer se je začel tudi razvoj računalništva;
  • na reaktorju smo med prvimi uporabili mikroprocesorje za vodenje procesov;
  • že v začetku sedemdesetih let smo uvedli računalniško zajemanje podatkov in nadzor nad eksperimenti;
  • v odseku za reaktorsko fiziko so za potrebe preračunov reaktorja TRIGA nabavili prvi zmogljiv osebni računalnik na IJS (IBM PC XT).

Začetek razvoja reaktorjev TRIGA na mednarodni ravni

Raziskovalni reaktor TRIGA Mark II je na Institut “Jožef Stefan”, v Sloveniji in širšem mednarodnem okolju pomembna znanstveno raziskovalna infrastruktura. Ime TRIGA izhaja iz njegovega osnovnega poslanstva:

T – treninga (izobraževanja in usposabljanja),
R – raziskav z nevtroni in gama sevanjem,
I – izdelave radioaktivnih izotopov, ter izvora reaktorja, ki ga je razvilo podjetje
G – General,
A – Atomics.

V desetletjih delovanja je reaktor postal osrednje mesto razvoja jedrske znanosti v Sloveniji. Poseben doprinos je imel v sedemdesetih in osemdesetih letih, ko so na njem proizvajali radioaktivne izotope za medicinsko diagnostiko in zdravljenje ter z njimi pomagali več kot 50.000 pacientom. Hkrati je predstavljal izobraževalno okolje za generacije jedrskih strokovnjakov, vključno s kadri, ki so sodelovali pri razvoju in obratovanju Nuklearna elektrarna Krško.

Danes reaktor deluje kot sodoben raziskovalni in izobraževalni center, ki praktično neprekinjeno obratuje že 60 let. V tem času se ni zgodila nobena nesreča ali resnejša odpoved opreme, ki bi pomenila kršenje varnostnih predpisov in standardov. Trenutno ima reaktor obratovalno dovoljenje do leta 2034. V tehničnem smislu pa je reaktor TRIGA zmožen obratovanja mnogo dlje.

Po obsežni rekonstrukciji v začetku devetdesetih let je reaktor pridobil možnost pulznega obratovanja, kar je dodatno razširilo njegove raziskovalne zmogljivosti. Leta 1999 so bili vsi izrabljeni gorivni elementi odstranjeni in vrnjeni v ZDA, kar pomeni, da od takrat na lokaciji ni visoko radioaktivnih odpadkov.

Arhitekturna zasnova reaktorja

Jedrski reaktor TRIGA na Institutu Jožef Stefan je zasnoval slovenski arhitekt Oton Jugovec, eden ključnih predstavnikov slovenske arhitekture druge polovice 20. stoletja. Njegovo delo zaznamujejo inventivnost, izrazit občutek za prostor ter sposobnost povezovanja tehničnih zahtev z jasno arhitekturno govorico. Deloval je v krogu arhitektov iz seminarja Edvard Ravnikar, ki so pomembno oblikovali arhitekturo 60. in 70. let.

Za razumevanje zasnove reaktorja TRIGA je ključen tudi Jugovčev projekt reaktorskega centra v Podgorici, kjer se je gradnja pričela leta 1963 pod njegovim vodstvom v okviru podjetja Slovenija projekt. To je bil njegov prvi večji projekt, pri katerem je celovito združil svoje arhitekturno znanje. Za arhitekturno zasnovo tega kompleksa je prejel Nagrado Prešernovega sklada.

Reaktorska zgradba v Podgorici je bila zasnovana kot izrazit, skoraj skulpturalen volumen zasukanega kvadratnega tlorisa. Geometrično deformirana kocka reaktorja deluje kot simbolna interpretacija jedrskega procesa – asociacija na gobasti oblak po eksploziji. Takšna abstraktna, modernistična artikulacija prostora je značilna za Jugovčev pristop, kjer arhitektura presega zgolj funkcionalno raven in pridobi tudi pomenovno dimenzijo.

Tlorisna zasnova centra je temeljila na kontrastu med introvertiranim osrednjim volumnom reaktorja in razraščeno kompozicijo spremljajočih objektov. Kompleks so sestavljali pogonski objekt in trakt za fiziko na severu ter reaktorska zgradba in trakt za kemijo na jugu, medtem ko je bil vodni stolp umeščen ločeno ob tehnične objekte. Posebnost predstavljajo montažne fasadne rešitve, lahkotnejši stekleni volumni ter izrazito oblikovani konstrukcijski elementi, kot je eliptično stopnišče vodnega stolpa.

Podobna načela se odražajo tudi pri reaktorju TRIGA (1961), kjer Jugovec združuje funkcionalne zahteve jedrske infrastrukture z jasno arhitekturno idejo. Dinamična kompozicija objektov kontrastira ravninski savski krajini, medtem ko introvertiran notranji prostor, zaščiten z masivno betonsko kupolo, izraža tehnološko kompleksnost in varnostne zahteve objekta.

Jugovec je znal zahtevne znanstvene in tehnološke programe prevesti v prepoznavno arhitekturno formo. Reaktor TRIGA tako ni le pomemben raziskovalni objekt, temveč tudi primer uspešne sinteze arhitekture in tehnologije v slovenskem prostoru. Za svoje delo je leta 1984 prejel Prešernova nagrada.
