On 25 May, the Jožef Stefan Institute ceremonially marked the 60th anniversary of the TRIGA research reactor – one of the most important scientific research infrastructure projects in Slovenia and the wider region. For six decades, the TRIGA reactor has made a significant contribution to the advancement of science, the education of nuclear experts, and the strengthening of international cooperation in the field of nuclear technologies.

On the occasion of the anniversary, the Republic of Slovenia awarded the Jožef Stefan Institute the Golden Order of Merit for its outstanding contribution to the development of science, research, and the peaceful use of nuclear energy. In her address, the President of the Republic of Slovenia, Dr Nataša Pirc Musar, emphasized that the TRIGA reactor is “an exceptional example of the peaceful use of nuclear energy for the benefit of humanity” and a symbol of the responsible management of scientific achievements.

The Director of the Jožef Stefan Institute, Prof. Leon Cizelj, highlighted that for 60 years TRIGA has represented the core of Slovenian and international knowledge in nuclear technologies, while also contributing significantly to the development of research infrastructure, the integration of science and industry, and the education of new generations of researchers. He also announced preparations for the new VERONICA research reactor, which will continue Slovenia’s tradition of scientific excellence.

The ceremony also featured Dr Bruno Feignier, Deputy Executive Director of the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA), who emphasized the long-standing cooperation between Slovenia and France in the field of research, as well as the importance of shared European research infrastructures for the future development of science and technology.

Since beginning operation in 1966, the TRIGA research reactor has enabled numerous scientific achievements, workforce development, and support for Slovenia’s nuclear energy sector, including the commissioning of the Krško Nuclear Power Plant. Today, it remains an important centre of knowledge, research, and international cooperation.

To mark the anniversary, we also prepared a special video celebrating the 60th anniversary of the TRIGA reactor, as well as statements by the Director of the Jožef Stefan Institute, Prof. Dr. Leon Cizelj, and the Head of the Reactor, Dr. Anže Jazbec and Prof. Dr. Luka Snoj.
